SC's Clyburn to speak at Democratic convention

August 13, 2008

U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina will speak at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

The State newspaper of Columbia reported Wednesday that Clyburn will speak Aug. 27. Clyburn told the newspaper he hasn’t prepared his speech yet but will follow the theme of the day, national security.

The vice-presidential nominee will also speak on the same day.

Presumptive nominee Barack Obama has not yet announced his choice for a running mate.

Clyburn ranks third in the U.S. House and played a key role in getting South Carolina the "first in the South" primary in January. Obama won South Carolina's primary with 55 percent of the vote.

Clyburn says Obama could win South Carolina in November, but Republicans expect to continue their hold on the state.
