Oconee Democrats set for national convention

August 13, 2008

Two of South Carolina's 45 delegates to the National Democratic Convention will represent Oconee County in Denver Aug. 25 through 28.

Mike Evatt, of Keowee, and Tremain Mattress, of Westminster, were elected in May as delegates at the South Carolina Democratic Party Convention.

Evatt, 45, has been a “Democrat since I was in my momma’s womb” and a member of the Oconee County Democratic Party since he was old enough to vote. Evatt had two children, Molly and Andrew, by his late wife, Kelly Godbey Evatt. The family attends New Hope Baptist Church. Evatt works at Cryovac.

Evatt has served in several Democratic Party posts, including being a former county chairman. He is currently a member of the State Executive Committee and the state Democratic Party Yellow Dog Club and former chair of the Third Congressional District Democratic Committee. He also co-chaired the Edwards for President Campaign for Oconee County in both 2004 and 2008. Representing the Third District, he is a pledged John Edwards delegate.

"I will work tirelessly with my fellow Democrats across this land to unite behind one ticket to bring about the change needed to lift us from this current condition we find ourselves in after eight long years of Republican rule," Evatt commented.

Mattress, 27, is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta and is currently a third-year law student at Duke University. Representing the Third US Congressional District, he is a pledged Senator Barack Obama delegate. Mattress served as field director of the South Carolina Democratic Leadership Council and interned with Senator Fritz Hollings in Washington, DC.

After college, Mattress spent three years at Dell Inc. in Austin, Texas. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, sports, cooking, freshwater fishing, fitness training and volunteering.
