SCDP Chair: DeMint, Brown and Barrett Bad for SC and World
June 26, 2008
Columbia, SC- South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler released the following statement today in response to Republican Senator Jim DeMint's opposition of a $50 billion expansion of the U.S. anti-AIDS program, which helps to fight AIDS in Africa and other impoverished countries. SC Republican Reps. Henry Brown and Gresham Barrett also opposed this bill.
"Jim DeMint, Henry Brown and Gresham Barrett should be ashamed of themselves for being so heartless. AIDS is not just a problem faced by impoverished countries; it's an epidemic that has devastated the entire world. Mr. DeMint has been quoted as saying this is "an attempt to buy friendship around the world" and this expansion would be "completely irresponsible." But in reality he and his fellow Republicans are the ones who are being irresponsible. The United States is in a position where it can be an ally in the war against a disease that kills 5,700 people per day," said Fowler. "South Carolinians deserve better leaders than these Republicans."
