SCDP Chair reminds Dawson it's not over until all the votes are counted

November 9, 2007

Columbia, SC - South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler released the following statement in response to SCGOP Chair Katon Dawson's premature congratulatory statement to Shane Massey.

"Katon Dawson seems to be jumping the gun in the Senate District 25 race. In a statement released late Tuesday night he said, "The good people of Aiken, Edgefield, McCormick and Saluda...have resoundingly showed their support for Senator-elect Shane Massey." The fact is there will be a mandatory recount Thursday, November 15, 2007due to the closeness of the race," said Fowler.

"The only thing that Mr. Dawson can say "resoundingly" is that his candidate doesn't know if he's won yet. The people of Senate District 25 will have the confidence to know that thanks to Democrats every vote cast in Tuesday's election will be counted. This would not be the case if voters had to rely on Republican leaders, like Dawson and Massey. This has been evident in past presidential elections and is the case with this election. The people of South Carolina and Senate District 25 deserve better. They deserve real leadership and they deserve to have all votes counted in an election before a winner is declared."
