SCDP Chair responds to reports of Giuliani's strategy
November 6, 2007
Columbia, SC- South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler is calling for state GOP Chair Katon Dawson to denounce presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani in response to reports that he may employ a
"Southern Strategy" to try to woo conservative voters in South Carolina.
"We're hearing that at least one of the Republican presidential candidates has come up with a 'Southern Strategy.' Most South Carolina voters know that's GOP talk for 'let's remind our fellow Republicans that we aren't all that crazy about African-Americans.'
Rudy Giuliani should be denounced by the GOP for the shameful tactics his strategists have devised. This kind of race-based campaign appeals only to those who want to reclaim the worst time in our nation's history. The former mayor pitches himself as the person who cleaned up New York City and bases his campaign on his 9-11 work to compensate for his deficiencies in things like foreign policy. However, it's important for us not to forget the anti-minority climate created in NYC under his leadership. His term in office wasn't filled with heroic acts; instead it included tragedies like the shooting of Amadou Diallo by New York City police," said Fowler.
"If the GOP really cares about the best interests of the minority voters they now want to court, they would denounce Mr. Giuliani. They should also tell him we are not stuck in the 1960s in South Carolina."
