South Carolina Democratic Party Chair's statement on SCHIP vote

September 28, 2007

Columbia SC--South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler released the following statement on the U.S. Senate's vote that will double the number of South Carolina children eligible for care under the State Chlildren's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), a bill which passed despite the opposition of South Carolina's Republican Senators:

"This vote demonstrates that our Republican Members of Congress, including our two US Senators, have no idea what it’s like for tens of thousands South Carolina families: Rep. Gresham Barrett of Westminster even told the press he cares more about smokers' welfare than the welfare of children, complaining that 'smokers are going to pay for this thing.' South Carolina Democrats in Congress (House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn and Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt voted to increase funding for the program), meanwhile, are championing the cause of families who work every day to make their kids' lives better but can't afford health insurance."
